40:48-2.40. Alcoholic beverage retail consumption licenses; reduction of number The governing body of any municipality in which the number of existing alcoholic beverage retail consumption licenses exceeds one for each 2,000 of its population according to the latest Federal census, may by ordinance determine it is in the public interest to reduce the number of such licenses, authorize the acquisition and retirement by the municipality of licenses in excess of such limitation by contracts with licensees and appropriate funds therefor.
