40:48-1.6 Findings, declarations relative to private outdoor video surveillance cameras. 1. The Legislature finds and declares that: a. The ability of law enforcement officials to timely investigate criminal activity is essential to apprehending culpable criminals and ensuring public safety. b. Footage from private outdoor video surveillance cameras may provide useful information for law enforcement officials investigating incidents of criminal activity that occurred within the vicinity of these cameras. c. The purpose of this act is to facilitate law enforcement investigations into criminal activity and save valuable time and resources by permitting a municipality to enact an ordinance allowing all owners of private outdoor video surveillance cameras in the municipality to voluntarily register their cameras with the municipal police department or force.
