38A:22-5 Tuition assistance, Vietnam veterans. 38A:22-5. a. As used in this section: "Vietnam veteran" means a resident of this State who: served in the Armed Forces of the United States in Southeast Asia in the Vietnam conflict and received a Vietnam Service Ribbon or an Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal; was honorably discharged or generally discharged under honorable conditions; and was domiciled in New Jersey on April 9, 1985, for a period of not less than two consecutive years, exclusive of any time spent on active duty. b. A Vietnam veteran, upon being accepted to pursue a course of study for an initial undergraduate degree in a public institution of higher education of this State as enumerated in N.J.S.18A:62-1, shall be entitled to tuition assistance, while enrolled as a student in good standing at that college, in an amount up to the full tuition cost as determined by the Department of Veterans Affairs pursuant to this section. c. A Vietnam veteran, upon being accepted to pursue a course of study for an initial undergraduate degree at an independent college or university located in the State, shall be entitled to tuition assistance, while enrolled as a student in good standing at that college or university, in an amount as determined by the Department of Veterans Affairs pursuant to this section, but in an amount not more than the tuition charged at Rutgers, The State University. d. A tuition award shall not be granted pursuant to this section unless the Vietnam veteran has applied for all other available State or federal student financial aid. e. Eligibility for this program shall be limited to a period of five years from April 9, 1985. A Vietnam veteran shall be eligible for a tuition award for four academic years, unless the veteran is enrolled in an undergraduate program regularly requiring five academic years for completion, in which case the veteran shall be entitled to a tuition award for a fifth year.
